According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Software Defined Radio Market is accounted for $26.10 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach $46.75 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 10.2% during the forecast period. SDR stands for Software Defined Radio, which is a radio communication system in which components that were previously implemented in hardware is now implemented in software on a computer or embedded device. Software radios can considerably help the military and mobile phone services, both of which must support a wide range of evolving radio protocols in real-time. SDR allows for the implementation of multiple communication standards on a single platform, enabling efficient and secure confidential communications

According to a released report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending reached USD 1981 billion in 2020, increasing by 2.6% compared to 2019.

Market Dynamics:

Driver:

Rising adoption of modern communication system over conventional systems

The demand for advanced communication systems has surged in the military and commercial sectors due to their improved and cost-efficient operation. The SDR offers various advantages over a traditional communication system. Such advantages include transmitting and receiving various modulation methods using a common set of hardware, enhancing or altering functionality through software up-gradation, simple architecture, and saving overall system cost by eliminating analog hardware. In addition to this, a significant development in the telecommunications industry and market is expected to support market growth.

Restraint:

Security concerns associated with new SDR installations

The chances of a security breach are high when installing or loading new software into an SDR unit through an over-the-air update. Unauthorized and potentially harmful software is very likely to be installed on the selected platform. The procedure is similar to that of installing software on laptops or personal computers, in which dangerous functions must be avoided. Concerns about unlicensed codes limit market expansion due to the risk of jeopardizing the security of users' assets and endangering the devices' communication capabilities. Such security issues will stymie the development of communication systems, including software-defined radios. As a result, security concerns are a major impediment to the expansion of the software-defined radio business.

Opportunity:

Innovations in new cognitive radio technology

Cognitive radios can employ locally unused spectrum to create new channels for spectrum access, allowing them to wander beyond boundaries. They also follow local restrictions and collaborate with a number of local service providers (networks) to provide connectivity at the lowest possible cost. Cognitive radios require systems that can reconfigure quickly and dynamically to take advantage of new spectrum opportunities. Furthermore, a significant number of SDR product designs for the civilian commercial sector, where hardware cost is a major consideration, are anticipated to employ dedicated and lightweight architectures. As a result, SDR-derived technologies such as cognitive radio will open up new commercial prospects.

Threat:

Upgrading communication standards

The presence of multiple standards in the communication spectrum with networks including 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE for mobile connections poses a challenge to the SDR market’s growth. This is because numerous standards stimulate the complexity within the communication network, further requiring considerable hardware upgrades or installations. Moreover, considering the handheld devices, multiple upgrades in standards pose a resistance to the SDR devices due to the integration of new hardware resulting in increased weight and size. Thus, SDRs should be capable of supporting several communication standards.

Covid-19 Impact:

The COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted worldwide economic activity. This epidemic has also been aided by the emergence of specified radio systems, sub-systems, and components. Although software creation, as exemplified by military radio transmission, is important, supply chain interruptions have currently halted output. The amount of exposure to COVID-19, which is the level at which production operations are undertaken while keeping export and import rules in mind, among other criteria, determines the restart of production activities. While businesses continue to accept orders, delivery timelines may not be adjusted. Despite the fact that the pandemic has had a significant influence on the market, it is predicted to rise gradually due to technical developments and rapid adaption.

The hardware segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period

Hardware plays a crucial role in the software-defined radio (SDR) market as it forms the physical foundation for implementing SDR technology. The RF front-end components in SDR systems include antennas, filters, amplifiers, mixers, and other components that interface with the radio frequency (RF) signals. These components are responsible for receiving and transmitting wireless signals and converting them into digital form for processing by the software-defined radio, which could be a major contributor in this segment's revenue growth.

The cognitive/intelligent radio segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period

Cognitive/intelligent radio is an advanced concept within the software-defined radio (SDR) market that aims to enhance the capabilities and performance of SDR systems. Cognitive radio refers to a radio that can autonomously perceive its operating environment, learn from it, and make intelligent decisions to optimize its communication parameters. Cognitive/intelligent radio systems possess the ability to sense and analyze the radio frequency spectrum. By employing techniques such as spectrum sensing, these radios can identify and detect available frequency bands, as well as detect and avoid occupied or congested spectrum areas.

Region with largest share:

North America will dominate the software defined radio sector in 2021 due to the Joint Tactical Networking Centre (JTNC) program, which provides technical assistance for wireless communication systems to the US Department of Defence. Software defined radio systems are widely employed in the defence sector as a result of research initiatives and the unification of all communication systems in state and federal agencies across North America. Furthermore, the increased financing for next-generation radio communication systems that can accept X-band frequencies by the US government is pushing demand for software defined radio systems, which help the market for Software Defined Radio develop in terms of revenue.

Region with highest CAGR:

The market in Asia Pacific is anticipated to rise steadily over the course of the forecast period. The Asia Pacific region has a large defence sector, with countries investing heavily in modernizing their defence capabilities. SDR technology is gaining traction in defence applications due to its flexibility, interoperability, and reconfigurability. Additionally, the Asia Pacific region has witnessed a significant increase in demand for wireless connectivity, driven by the proliferation of smartphones, IoT devices, and digital services. SDR technology supports the efficient use of spectrum resources and enables wireless networks to adapt to changing demand and technologies. This flexibility and scalability make SDR an attractive solution for meeting the growing connectivity requirements of the region.
