That model is now being challenged by rising electricity demand, renewable energy expansion, data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, electrification, aging infrastructure and the need for greater energy security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan&#8217;s <strong>Seventh Strategic Energy Plan<\/strong>, approved in February 2025, recognizes this shift and calls for simultaneous progress on stable energy supply, economic growth and decarbonization. The government expects electricity demand to increase as digital transformation (DX) and green transformation (GX) accelerate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is more than an energy-mix change. Japan is beginning to rethink how electricity is generated, transmitted, distributed and consumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a Stable Grid to a More Flexible Electricity System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan&#8217;s traditional electricity model was designed around centralized power generation and highly reliable networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emerging system is considerably more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of electricity moving primarily in one direction, Japan increasingly needs to accommodate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Large-scale renewable generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rooftop and distributed solar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Battery storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nuclear generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data centers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Semiconductor factories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industrial electrification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local energy systems and microgrids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates new requirements for transmission and distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grid needs to become more flexible while maintaining the reliability that Japan&#8217;s economy depends on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Renewable Energy Is Becoming a Core Part of the System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan is moving toward a much larger role for renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government&#8217;s FY2040 outlook targets renewables at approximately <strong>40\u201350% of the electricity mix<\/strong>, compared with 22.9% in FY2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar PV alone is projected to rise from 9.8% of generation in FY2023 to approximately <strong>23\u201329% by FY2040<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wind, hydropower, geothermal and biomass are also expected to contribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But increasing renewable generation creates a different operating challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar and wind output can vary depending on weather and time of day. Generation may also be located far from major consumption centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That makes grid flexibility, storage, transmission capacity and advanced power-management systems increasingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
