According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Biogas Upgrading Market is accounted for $0.95 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $3.81 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 22.0% during the forecast period. Biogas is a green energy source that is produced by anaerobic digestion of organic wastes. This breakdown of organic material produces biogas, which is composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and a few other elements. Production of biogas is cost effective as feed required for its production is easily available. It usually requires municipal waste, bio waste, energy crops and agricultural waste. Biogas is generated from microbial fermentation: anaerobic digestion. Upgrade biogas to a methane-rich product gas, also known as biomethane. By applying highly efficient membranes the separation of methane from biogas can reach an efficiency of more than 99.5% and render biomethane suitable for injection in the national grid or compression to CNG.

Market Dynamics:

Driver:

Renewable energy production

As the demand for renewable energy sources is quickly expanding, biogas will assume a huge part in the coming years. Overhauled biogas, otherwise called green gas, bio methane or PNG, replaces ordinary fossil gas and can be infused in the gas matrix or utilized as vehicle fuel and in the end for power and warm generation. Biomass is the main renewable vitality source that is suitable for creating heat, force, gas and fluid fills too. The vitality acquired from biogas is ecological benevolent, as well as is fantastically flexible. Not at all like other renewable vitality sources, for example, wind or solar energy, biogas creation is moderately unaffected by the climate conditions.

Restraint:

Presence of stringent government regulations

Government policies and regulations might affect the suitability and course of events for a bio energy plant. Policy mechanisms that influence bio energy activities might take the type of regulations, targets, orders, impetuses, tax rules and guidelines. Every biomass is distinctive, and there are contrasts in how complex the approaches and regulations are for each. Depending upon the area and bio energy plant, the strategies and regulations applicable to the venture might incorporate zones incorporate environment, clearing vegetation, petroleum/gas, electricity, transport, local improvement, health and safety.

Opportunity:

Growing need to treat residues and wastes

The usage of waste in production of biogas has increased. Several companies are entering in to this market as the market is having more possibilities in the production of the biogas. The waste collected from various source like agricultural corps and manure management and industries which produce organic residues and the companies which produce the chemical waste which cannot be used for any other purposes are used in the production of biogas. The waste collected from various sources gives number of opportunities for companies to enter into the market. Even the leftover food which is a waste can be used in the production of the biogas. The municipalities collecting waste from house hold and industrial waste is very useful in production of biogas.  These factors mainly drive the companies to enter into the market.

Threat:

Unavailability of financial support

The availability of financial support for the small companies who are willing to start the biogas plants will be difficult as the cost of technology will be huge. In short they cannot start biogas plant with life savings because of huge requirement of funds. The financial support from government will also be minimal because of the lack of awareness. The creation or adjustment of auxiliary conditions for individual speculation rulings for biogas plants, e.g. more basic control of firewood utilization and tree-felling, regulations concerning the treatment and transfer of substrates.

The agricultural wastes segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period

The agricultural wastes segment is estimated to have a lucrative growth. In rural areas, plenty cellulosic biomass in form of agriculture waste, are available in huge quantity. It has a bio-energy potential to fulfill the energy demand. Production of biogas using biomass is excellent solution in rural development technology to fulfill energy needs. The agro-waste contains large quantity of lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses, nitrogen and carbon contents which is important source for biogas production. Biogas production from local agro-waste by using Lab-scale digester minimises the use of agro-waste in burning for cooking food that result in controlling pollution by reduce emission of greenhouse gases. This agrowaste has energy potential therefore necessary to utilise such agro-waste properly without creating pollutions. Adaptation of biogas technology by using lignocellulosic waste with cattle dung as source of microbes is eco-friendly technology. It is the prominent agriculture waste, renewable source and perennial crops with good calorific value, low ash content and cost effective.

The membrane systems segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period

The membrane systems segment is anticipated to witness the fastest CAGR growth during the forecast period. The membrane is a porous material that lets some gases permeate through its structure. Employing an adequate material, it is possible to have selectivity between the gases of the mixture to be separated. For this particular application, two different streams are obtained which include a permeate gas mainly CO2, water, and ammonia, and the retentate (concentrated CH4). The most commonly employed materials are hollow fibers made of different polymers. In this process, the biogas is compressed to 16 bars and then routed to a two-stage membrane process where methane with purity higher than 90% can be obtained.

Region with highest share:

North America is projected to hold the largest market share during the forecast period. Biogas production is on the verge of a major expansion across North America. Work is underway to create a single quality standard for natural gas distribution systems that will allow supply from non-conventional sources like biomethane. Canada and the US have set their minds to green energy and great possibilities. While biogas energy is in the relatively early stages of development in Canada, the opportunities for growth are significant, and would contribute to sustainability in communities across the country. Biogas production offers a wide range of benefits for energy utilization, environmental protection, and economic development. Biogas production is a small but growing industry in Canada, with significant potential for expansion and development.

Region with highest CAGR:

Asia Pacific is projected to have the highest CAGR over the forecast period. Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period, owing to the growing demand for renewable energy in this region. At present, Asia Pacific occupies a leading position in terms of the total number of biogas plants. Nevertheless, most of these plants are small-scale and are serving a community or a single house. India has vast potential for biogas production especially from cattle dung. Although biogas production in India is increasing, upgrading of biogas to biomethane has been very limited. The use of CNG as vehicle fuel is mandatory in many cities, including Delhi. As CNG technology is easily available in the country, biomethane can potentially be used for all applications where CNG is used. However, CO2 removal and compression of the produced biomethane into cylinders is necessary for transport applications e.g. three wheelers, cars, pickup vans etc and also for stationary applications with high consumption or at long distances from the biogas source. Although biogas production in India is increasing, upgrading of biogas to biomethane has been very limited.

Key Developments:

In January 2021, Air Liquide and Cummins signed an agreement to promote green hydrogen. Cummins has provided a 20-megawatt PEM electrolyzer system to generate green hydrogen, making it the largest in operation in the world. The electrolyzer is installed at the Air Liquide hydrogen production facility in Bécancour, Quebec, and can produce over 3,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually using clean hydropower.

In January 2020, Aemetis Biogas acquired a grant worth USD 4.1 million from California Energy Commission (CEC) to construct a biogas upgrading facility. The facility will convert dairy biogas to renewable natural gas (RNG) as a final processing step after biogas is delivered through a pipeline from anaerobic digesters.

In September 2020, Clean Energy Fuels partnered with Estes Express Lines to expand natural gas vehicle fleet. Estes Express Lines will add to its fleet 50 new trucks fueled with Redeem™ renewable natural gas (RNG), bringing its total to 71.
